Prior to 1994, he was provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at Montana State University and held faculty and administrative positions at the University of Colorado. He also is a director of Expeditors International of Washington, Inc. . He previously served on the board of directors of Omnicare, Inc. until 2015. He is a Life Member of the Council on Foreign Relations and is a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration. He has also been a Fulbright Fellow, a Fellow of the American Council on Education and served on many nonprofit boards. He is an experienced leader of major organizations, with strong skills in government and international relations, strategic planning and public company executive compensation. since 2008.
